The Evans Family

Maddi & Zuku Evans

In May 2000 we were looking for our third basenji. We contacted Joy Copeman (we had some old scrolls from the early 1990's when we were members) and she was able to put us in touch with someone who had advertised a basenji pup. This one was a one year old red & white girl. Just who we needed. We took Cairo (our first basenji then 8.5) to see her, she was so thin she looked a bit like a ferret, but we loved her anyway. So we ended up with Maddi. Maddi has had a number of health problems with turned feet, bad back knees, a neck injury, but has come through OK. While she is not the normal agile basenji, she has a wonderful nature and is so soft. The kids get on well with her and she will often be where they are. We moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2006.

In May 2008 we were blessed with our fourth basenji, another tri boy we named Zuku. He's the youngest pup we have owned, being 3 months old when he joined us. We adapted his name from the Swahili word "Marzuku" meaning "Blessed". Our now much older children adore him. We still had Cairo (then nearly 17) and Maddi (then 9). Zuku melted our hearts from the time we saw him, and he has a very sweet nature too (especially compared to basenjis of 10 years or more ago). He's such a vocal little chap, especially when our teenagers arrive home from school, or around meal time. Zuku has helped to fill a huge hole left when we lost Cairo in December 2008.
